Alison Jay’s Nursery Collection Four First Question Blocks

Four chunky board books illustrate some basic early vocabulary in Alison Jay's unmistakable "cracked" style. Entitled "Four first question blocks", thee sturdy books come in a very smart presentation box illustrated with pictures from the contents. "What is yellow?" focuses on colours, "Who is that?" features animals, "Where is Teddy?" invites the baby to find missing toys, and "What is this?" homes in on a small detail of a picture and then reveals the entire picture on the next page.
The books are small enough for a child's hands to hold, but these are books to share: an adult's assistance will certainly be needed until the child has become accustomed to the "cracks" in the pictures and the occasionally odd proportions which are typical of Jay's style. However, these will introduce a young child to painterly pictures rather than the strictly representational, and the set will make a lovely present for the discerning family.
